AlterEgo Productions, President

Leslie  Berman, an attorney, journalist, arts and music producer, and President of AlterEgo Productions, is a native New Yorker who came to Louisiana in 2000 to take up a one-year federal clerkship with the Honorable James T. Trimble, Jr. in Lake Charles, but stayed to participate in the rich cultural and arts life of Louisiana.

Berman graduated from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, New York, where she was Senior Editor of the Law Review in 1992-1993. Her Law Review note, “H, O, P Spells Trouble for Foreign Performing Artists: A Proposal to Correct the Anomalous Award of Temporary Employment Visas to Non-Employees,” analyzed the misapplication of non-immigrant work visa status to the arts and entertainment industries’ independent contractors — a subject that remains timely today. Following law school, she became a doctoral candidate in legal philosophy and a law, feminism and media studies tutor for visiting student programs, at New College, University of Oxford, U.K.

Before attending the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Berman was an arts editor and freelance music critic in London and New York, writing for such venues as Rolling Stone magazine, The Village Voice, New York Newsday, City Limits (UK), and The New York Times. In addition, Berman has contributed music journalism chapters to Rock She Wrote: Women Write About Rock, Pop, and Rap, to Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Book of Women in Rock, and to Not Necessarily the New Age, as well as liner notes for enough folk and pop albums to join the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and to vote in the Grammy’s.

She has expanded her involvement in the local area as the President of the Music Museum of Southwest Louisiana, where they are currently archiving and preparing touring exhibits, set to highlight the lives of multi-genre musicians who have lived and worked in Southwest Louisiana.  Her current music column, “Eclectic Company,” may be read bi-weekly in Lake Charles’ The Jambalaya News.
